Challenges faced by nurses in hospitals
Profile
In
this article I will talk about a nurse whose name is Graham Levy's and how an
incident ended his nursing career and some other short stories that were shared
by the nurses that includes various difficulties that were faced by them at
workplace. There were various types of violence that were faced by
him while he was working. Graham Levy, a former nurse who was assaulted
by a patient, has a 15-centimeter hole in his stomach wall, restricted neck
movement, hearing loss, and psychological problems. He is no longer employed
and is considered to have a whole-body impairment of 32%. Mr. Levy remembers
the day he was attacked while seated across the street from Macquarie Hospital,
a mental health facility in Sydney's north.
Challenges and Limitations in Brief
Situational Problem - The first time he has visited since being assaulted
in February 2016 is now. He feels awfully and unpleasant being in hospital. His
life was instantly altered that day. He entered his workplace as usual.
He was given a seriously ill patient to care for. As usual he introduced
himself to the patient and the patient stood up and started screaming at him.
Suddenly the patient hit him, and he went to the ground. Then
patient kicked him twice in the head and abdomen. A growing number of violent
assaults against nurses in hospitals and other healthcare facilities across
many Australian states, including Mr. Levy's instance, number in the hundreds.
Institutional Problem - Lack of institutional support and concealment
of the scope of the issue are caused by the belief that violence is an
anticipated component of nursing profession and should only be reported in
extreme cases. The findings of the current study demonstrated that nurses are
exposed to many forms of violence throughout their professional activity,
including physical violence and verbal abuse. The fact that hospital
administrators conceal the realities from the supervisors from the Ministry of
Health is another significant difficulty that nurses must deal with.
Dispositional challenges - These difficulties are
those that employees encounter due to their character, abilities,
or characteristics. Sometimes the female nurses have to go through
sexual harassment and due to this they are both physically and
mentally attacked.
In
a hospital or clinical setting, workplace dangers provide nurses with
additional difficulties. Nurses are significantly more likely to come into
contact with someone who has an infectious disease than the general population
is since they care for sick patients.
Strategies that can be used
Guidelines - The prevention and intervention of workplace
violence calls for programmed that effectively decrease or eliminate risk
using methods including workplace analysis, preventive measures, and health and
safety training. Zero-tolerance guidelines are essential for eliminating
violence in medical facilities as well.
Diverse
cultural training - Diverse cultural training programs can
be a first step in eliminating inter-staff bias, but they fall short as a
stand-alone solution to discrimination in the healthcare industry. Although
while social dynamics and relations cannot be eliminated by one institution
alone, all institutional levels should take anti-racism measures into
consideration and enhance them, especially in light of the growing diversity in
clinical teams.
Activities - Provide nurses the chance to take part in
group activities to strengthen their bonds with other employees and make them
feel more a part of the team. This might group meals, team-building
exercises, or any other activity that stimulates interaction and teamwork.
